Who are the best voice over artists of all time? 

Answering this question for us is a bit like some people deciding who their favourite music artists is or favourite player in their sporting team. So, to come up with the best voice over artists of all time, we consulted the ultimate source of truth – Youtube! Here is their top 10.

1. Mel Blanc

It’s hard to argue against Mel Blanc as the number one voice over artist of all time. In a career spanning over 60 years, Mel’s voice over work on radio made him a household name in the US. However, it was as the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and others in animated cartoons that made Mel a worldwide star.

Don LaFontaine

We’ve highlighted Don LaFontaine before in our posts for his work as a voice-over artist for movie trailers. It’s believed he recorded more than 5,000 movie trailers in his career. He was also the voice behind television adverts, television shows and other productions.

3. Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman is of course best known for his acting, however, his deep voice is also widely sought after for voice over work. He’s even played the voice of God in the Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty movies.

One interesting fact is that Freeman’s distinctive voice isn’t entirely natural. He learned to enunciate each word and speak lower during acting lessons.

4. Seth McFarlane

Seth McFarlane could indeed make the top 10 in a variety of fields. He’s an actor, screenwriter, producer, singer and voice over artist. For voice-over, he is perhaps most well-known for his work in Family Guy, in which he plays the voices of several characters.

5. James Earl Jones

It would be remiss to leave James Earl Jones off this list, when you consider he was the voice behind one of the most iconic movie characters of a generation. While Jones has done extensive voice over work, he’s best known as the voice behind Star Wars’ Darth Vader.

Interestingly, Jones was born with a stutter. He credits poetry and acting in helping him overcome his speech difficulties.

6. William Richard West

Better known as Billy West, he got his start in radio. He then did voice roles in television and quickly moved into animations.

One of West’s claims to fame is that he was one of few voice over artists to impersonate Mel Blanc and his voices of iconic characters such as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

7. Hank Azaria

Hank Azaria joined The Simpsons with little voice over experience. He was obviously a quick learner, however, as he soon did the voice for several characters. Like many in this list, Azaria is also a well-known actor.

8. Tara Strong

Tara Strong’s list of voice over work is as impressive as any in this list. She’s worked in many well-known animations, including Rugrats and Family Guy. She’s also done a lot of voice over work for video games.

9. James Jonah Cummings

With around 400 voice over roles to his credit, Jim Cummings’ career has certainly been prolific. He was the voice of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Taz in famous animations. He’s also well-known for voicing Smokey Bear in many commercials.

10. Robin Williams

While Robin Williams is best known for his TV and movies roles, and his work as a comedian, his eclectic voice has also seen him widely sought after for voice over work. His list of work includes animated movies Aladdin, Robots and Happy Feet.
